From Balatro and Zet Zillions to Cobalt Core and Wildfrost, we’ve seen a vast expansion of the best roguelike deckbuilders in recent years. But all eyes are on Slay the Spire 2. The pioneering genre champion remains a tough act to top even to this day, and its sequel promises to build on developer Mega Crit’s creation with new classes, more cards, and a wealth of enemies to put your decks to the test. In a new blog, the studio reveals how it’s splashing a tiny bit of RPG into StS 2 with the introduction of quest cards.
“This is a wild month because a lot of us are playing Monster Hunter Wilds,” Mega Crit writes in its ‘Neowsletter’ for March, “but, outside of that bad joke, development progresses at a good pace.” The developer certainly isn’t resting on its laurels with Slay the Spire 2, which is looking set to follow in its predecessor’s footsteps to join the ranks of the best roguelikes on PC. Last month, we got a glimpse of enchantments, and this time we’re taking a look at another new card type, quests.
Quests are rare cards with specific requirements that lead to great rewards when completed. “Each quest is quite different from one another,” Mega Crit explains, “but we hope you get to encounter every one of them.” We’re shown the Byrdonis Egg – it’s an unplayable card that features an image of a large egg in a nest, and says that it “can be hatched at a rest site.”
While the reward for hatching this egg isn’t explicitly confirmed, it’s followed directly in the post by an image of a large green bird that appears to be fighting alongside the Ironclad as a combat companion. I think we can draw the lines between those two things. The developer teases that quests “look quite different from regular cards; when do they show up?”
Mega Crit co-founder Casey Yano also answers some questions from the community. He says that we can expect “many features at the start of the run,” with a few changes the team can’t talk about yet. He does, however, confirm that Neow (the giant whale from the first Slay the Spire that offers you boons at the beginning of each attempt) will return “with new and old blessings.” Asked for a one-word spoiler of another as-yet-unseen feature, he simply responds with, “Stars.”
Yano also assures that the Merchant will be returning. He lists some additional quality-of-life improvements such as viewing the turn number and current floor info, having access to card, relic, and other information mid-run, and items being clearer when you can’t use them with red-tinged wiggles. He also confirms that donut-shaped enemy Donu tastes of bronze, as it’s “a Toric Construct named after a beloved fried pastry” and all the constructs are made of that same metal.
I really enjoyed the dynamic of quests in Hearthstone, and they seem like a good fit for Slay the Spire 2 as well. The example shown provides another excuse to call in at a rest site when you might not otherwise need to use it, adding an extra layer of strategy to your decision making. The Slay the Spire 2 release date is set to fall some time in 2025; we’ll keep you updated with all the details as they come.
